    Star Aniseed Ground

    Illicium verum

    Form: Powder

    Product description

Star Aniseed, also known as star anise, is a spice widely recognised for its distinctive star-shaped appearance and licorice-like flavour. It belongs to the Illiciaceae family and is native to China and Vietnam, though it is also cultivated in other parts of Asia. Star anise is named for its star-shaped pericarp (fruit) that typically contains eight pointed pods or carpels, each containing a shiny seed. It is about 3 cm in diameter on average. The flavour profile of star anise is reminiscent of licorice, with a slightly sweet and aromatic taste. It has a strong, spicy aroma that is often described as warm and inviting.

Star Aniseed contains volatile oils, flavonoids and sesquiterpenes and the fruit is dried and ground down for ease of use in many applications.

    How is it used?

Star aniseed is a versatile spice used in both sweet and savoury dishes across various cuisines, especially in Asian cooking. It is used whole or ground to add flavour to soups, stews, broths, and marinades. The whole star can be added during cooking and removed before serving, similar to a bay leaf. It is a key ingredient in Chinese five-spice powder, imparting its unique flavour to the blend.

Star aniseed is used to flavour beverages such as teas, mulled wines, and cocktails. It adds depth and warmth to these drinks. It is sometimes used in baking for desserts, breads, and pastries, particularly in recipes that call for warm, spicy flavours.

Traditionally, star aniseed has been used in various cultures for its potential health benefits. Star Aniseed is thought to support digestive and respiratory health along with containing compounds such as flavonoids and polyphenols that are thought to have antioxidant effects, potentially helping to combat oxidative stress and support overall health.
