Vervain Herb Powder
Verbena officinalis
Form: Powder
Product description
Also known as verbena, yerba de Santa Ana, enchanter’s plant, herb of the cross, Juno’s tears, and pigeon’s grass, the Vervain herb is native to Asia and Europe.
Small and spindly in appearance, this plant is shrouded in mysticism and was one of the Druid’s most sacred herbs. This plant is most at home in sunny locations and tends to grow in rough grassland and on roadside verges. Growing up to 2 meters tall in well-drained soil, this perennial herb’s pink flowers are in bloom from July to September.
The plant has a bitter flavour and contains iridoids, glycosides, flavonoids, triterpenes and volatile oils. It is a member of the Verbenaceae family.
It has a very bitter taste and is aromatic when rubbed. It is also sold in cut form.
How is it used?
The plant is commonly used in herbal teas and tinctures. It also adds an uplifting, floral scent to toiletries and cosmetics.
Verbena herb has traditionally been applied to medicinal products and is thought to help relieve mild gum disease, swelling of the sinuses, cardiovascular disease, kidney and liver complaints, and depression. For sinus issues, such as sore throats, coughs and colds, verbena is often paired with other herbs, such as gentian root and elder flower.
It has been used historically as a purgative for animals.
Verbena on its own has a strong, bitter taste, so it should only be applied in moderation to recipes. Lemon verbena is recommended when cooking, as it adds a pleasant citrus flavour to tea, cocktails, baked goods, jams and jellies. It’s also suitable for use as a rub or in a marinade for poultry dishes.
