Glechoma hederacea
Form: Powder
Product description
Commonly known as Cat’s Foot, Devil’s Candlesticks and Alehoof — Ground Ivy) is part of the Lamiaceae family. One of Britain’s most common perennial plants, it has since spread from Europe to North America, Asia and New Zealand.
Preferring damp conditions, the evergreen plant Ground Ivy can grow in the shade or in the sun and is often found on the edges of woodland or near hedgerows. The creeping roots are known to prevent other plants from growing nearby.
While it’s not the same as ivy, it still has distinctive trailing characteristics and dark green leaves. Where it differs in appearance from ivy is in the heart-shaped leaves with scalloped edges. It’s also less shiny or waxy on the surface. In summer, the ground ivy blooms with bluish flowers and a purple tint.
Ground ivy contains essential oils, flavonoids, triterpenes, hydroxy octadecadienoic acid derivative, marrubiin and polyphenolic acids.
How is it used?
In cuisine, this wild herb is a suitable substitute for sage or thyme. It adds a pleasant, earthy flavour with a hint of herbal mint or sage. It’s an ideal garnish or natural flavouring for drinks and savoury dishes. With a high iron content, it’s nutritious, too.
Back in the 15th century, it was used to flavour hops for ale and beer. It was also steeped in boiling water to make a tea known as gill tea.
Ground Ivy is believed to have calming properties that reduce irritation caused by a build-up of mucus. Thought to have expectorant properties, the plant was traditionally used to help clear headaches, congestion, coughs and colds.
