Product description
Marshmallow leaves are the foliage of the marshmallow plant which are then dried and finely cut for ease of use. Marshmallow has a long history of use in traditional herbal remedies, dating back to ancient Greece and Rome, where it was valued for its soothing properties. The leaves are finely cut for easier infusion in teas, herbal preparations, or as an ingredient in poultices and topical applications. Marshmallow is a perennial herbaceous plant native to Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa. The leaves are soft, velvety, and heart-shaped, with toothed edges. They are typically harvested from mature plants for their use in herbal remedies and culinary uses.
Marshmallow leaves contain Mucilage, flavonoids and polyphenolics.
How is it used?
Marshmallow leaves are thought to be rich in mucilage, a sticky substance that becomes gel-like when mixed with water. Mucilage coats and soothes irritated tissues, providing a protective barrier. It is because of this that the Marshmallow plant has been historically used to ease coughs and respiratory ailments. The leaves also contain flavonoids, which could provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. It is also thought that the leaves can be used to help treat digestive issues and in the form of an ointment marshmallow has traditionally been used to treat boils and ulcers.
The leaves can be used to make teas, infusions and topical applications and are also smoked, sometimes rolled with tobacco.
