Product description
White Pond Lily is an aquatic plant that can be found in streams, marshes and ponds and has been harvested by traditional healers for hundreds of years. It is believed to be a highly astringent plant which can help tighten tissues, reduce irritation and calm discharge. The root is the main part of the plant that is used, though the leaves may also be used for poultices and infusions.
Mild medicine
One of the most potent chemicals that white pond lily contains is tannins. These chemicals are helpful for removing microbes from the body and fighting viruses and bacteria. Tannins are also able to speed up the body’s ability to clot blood, meaning they can also be beneficial to the healthy healing of minor cuts and injuries. While tannins are responsible for giving a slightly bitter taste, they can also help to balance blood pressure.
Root benefits
The white pond lily root has antiseptic, astringent and demulcent properties. It can be used to make tea which traditional medicine practitioners believe could treat inflamed glands, mouth sores, gastrointestinal inflammation, diarrhoea and more. In addition, the roots can be transformed into a poultice which can be applied directly to help calm swelling, boils, and inflammatory skin conditions.
What’s in a name?
This plant takes its botanical name from the Greek word ‘numphe’ which means water nymph or virgin. According to Greek legend, the flower of the white pond lily is reputed to have anti-aphrodisiac qualities.
