    Bilberries Ground

    Vaccinium myrtillus

    Form: Powder

    Product description

Bilberries, also known as European blueberries, are small, dark blue berries that grow on low, woody shrubs. They are closely related to blueberries and huckleberries and are prized for their flavour and health benefits. The bilberry plants are small, deciduous shrubs that typically grow to a height of 10-50 cm (4-20 inches). The leaves are oval or lance-shaped, finely toothed, and bright green. The plant produces small, bell-shaped flowers that are pale pink or white. These flowers develop into dark blue or nearly black berries, which are about 5-10 mm in diameter. Bilberries grow in a low, spreading manner and often form dense thickets. They have a shallow root system and prefer acidic, well-drained soils. These berries are then dried and ground into a convenient powder.

Part of the Cacciniaceae family, bilberries contain anthocyanosides, vitamin C, catechins and volatile oils.

    How is it used?

Bilberries have been used in traditional herbal remedies for centuries. They are believed to improve vision, particularly night vision, due to their high levels of anthocyanins. During World War II, British pilots reportedly consumed bilberry jam to improve their night vision, although scientific evidence supporting this claim is limited. Bilberries are also used for their anti-inflammatory and astringent properties, and they may benefit cardiovascular health, blood sugar regulation, and digestive health. They have historically been used to treat diarrhoea and haemorrhoids.
