Product description
Cascara bark comes from the Cascara sagrada tree. This tree is native to the Pacific Northwest region of North America, including the United States and Canada. The name “Cascara sagrada” means “sacred bark” in Spanish, reflecting its historical and medicinal significance. The Cascara sagrada tree typically grows to a height of 10-30 feet (3-9 metres) with a dark brownish-grey bark which becomes rough with age. The inner bark is the part used for herbal remedy purposes. The leaves are simple, alternate, and deciduous, with a finely serrated margin. They are typically dark green on the top and lighter underneath. The tree produces small, greenish-yellow flowers in clusters.
Part of the Rhamnaceae family, Cascara Bark contains anthraquinone glycosides.
How is it used?
Cascara bark has been used for centuries by Native American tribes for its potential laxative properties. The bark was traditionally aged for at least a year before use to reduce its potency and prevent severe cramping. Early European settlers also adopted its use, and it became a popular remedy for constipation in Western herbal remedies. The primary use of cascara bark is as a natural laxative. It contains compounds called anthraquinones, which stimulate the muscles of the large intestine, promoting bowel movements.
The FDA has put some restrictions on the use of Cascara. Natural products can cause side effects. As with any food product or herbal supplement, it is advisable to seek professional advice before newly incorporating into one’s routine or into a new product, especially for individuals who are susceptible to allergies, have other dietary issues, weakened immune systems or other health complications.
