Product description
Cloves are aromatic flower buds derived from the clove tree, native to the Maluku Islands in Indonesia. They are widely used as a spice in cuisines around the world and have a long history of use in herbal remedies and culinary applications. Cloves are small, nail-shaped flower buds that are about 1.5-2 cm long. They have a tapered stem end and a rounded head. They have a strong, warm, and sweet flavour with a slightly bitter undertone. They are highly aromatic, imparting a rich and spicy aroma to dishes.
Cloves contain a variety of volatile oils, tannins, chromones, flavonoids and sterols.
How is it used?
Cloves are a versatile spice used in both sweet and savoury dishes. They are a key ingredient in various spice blends, including garam masala, pumpkin spice, and Chinese five-spice powder. Cloves are also used to flavour beverages such as mulled wine, chai tea, and certain cocktails. They are used in baking for cakes, cookies, breads, and fruit desserts, adding depth of flavour. Cloves are added to sauces, marinades, and pickles for their aromatic qualities.
Cloves are also used in herbal medicines, aromatherapy and as a natural preservative. Traditionally cloves have been used to treat toothache and in dental preparations.
Clove extracts have been used in cosmetics and perfumes for their believed antioxidant and antibacterial properties as well as their aroma.
