    Cowslip Flowers

Primula veris L./ Primula elatior L.

    Form: Whole

    Product description

Forever synonymous with Spring, Cowslip Flowers were traditionally harvested on May Day to decorate garlands.

Thanks to their resemblance to keys, these pretty, yellow flowers have also been called St Peter’s Keys or Keys Of Heaven and were said to grow where St Peter dropped the Key of Earth. Mythology aside, this meadow-dwelling plant also holds its own in the world of alternative remedies.

You can order your Cowslip Flowers wholesale from Joseph Flach & Sons.

    Cowslip Flowers' uses

    A HELPFUL HEALER

Through the ages, Cowslip Leaves were frequently used to help treat insomnia and sleeping problems as it was believed to have sedative qualities. The Cowslip Flowers were a common remedy dished out to help soothe coughs, although they have somewhat milder sedative action too.

Today Cowslip Flowers can be made into a tea, tincture, ointment or cream. It is believed to contain chemicals that can help loosen and thin out mucus, so it is commonly used to help treat blocked noses and sore throats, as well as bronchitis.

    A COOKING COMPANION

While the leaves of the Cowslip plant are commonly used in traditional Spanish dishes, in England the flowers have a history of being used to flavour country wine. Cowslip Wine is brewed from ‘peeps’ - the yellow petal rings - combined with sugar, lemon rind, lemon juice, water and yeast.

The resulting brew was often given to children as medicine and was believed to have impressive sedative qualities. However, with Cowslip Flowers on the decline in England and each batch of wine requiring a gallon of peeps (or hundreds of flowers) this delicacy has become rarer.
