Product description
Mountain grape root, specifically rough cut, refers to the root of the plant also known as Oregon grape or holly-leaved barberry. This plant is native to the Pacific Northwest region of North America and is well-known for its herbal remedy properties. Part of the Berberidaceae family, Mountain grape is an evergreen shrub with holly-like leaves, yellow flowers, and blue-black berries. The root is typically harvested for its herbal properties and is often available in a rough cut form for various preparations.
Berberine, berbamine, and hydrastine are the primary active compounds found in the root. Berberine is most notable for its broad-spectrum antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. Mountain Grape Root is said to contain tannins and resins which contribute to the astringent and tonic properties of the root. The root also is thought to contain several vitamins (such as vitamin C) and minerals, although in smaller quantities compared to its alkaloid content.
How is it used?
The rough cut root is often used to make decoctions and tinctures, either to be consumed or used topically. Mountain Grape Root is thought to have many health benefits, said to include supporting liver health, immune support, antioxidants and having antimicrobial benefits.
Historically the Mountain Grape Root has been used in salves and ointments to treat skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, and acne due to its reported antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
The root has the potential to help support blood sugar regulation and cardiovascular health.
