Product description
Also known as the common nettle, Nettle is a perennial plant that grows in hedgerows, riverbanks and grassland areas. The leaves and stems are known for having thousands of tiny, stinging hairs, which release painful toxins when touched. Once they are cooked and wilted, they lose their stinging power, and they make a nutritious addition to herbal teas, soups and curries. Packed with nutrients, the nettle is abundant in fibre, vitamin C, iron and antioxidant compounds – the list goes on! In fact, due to its mineral-rich contents, this wild herb is heralded as a superfood. From the root and leaves to the flowers, the whole of the plant can be used.
How is it used?
Nettles can be added to horse feed to support a healthy blood supply and circulation. For humans, the nutritious nettle can be added to a host of recipes, from freshly baked bread to smoothies, soups, sauces, risottos and curries. When cooked, they resemble the taste of spinach and cucumber.
Nettle herb is believed to ease hay fever and allergy symptoms. Due to its calcium content, it can also be used as a herbal supplement to strengthen bones and boost iron.
The herb can also be ground into a powder and added to creams, soaps and lotions. As a natural astringent, it’s believed to offer relief to dry, itchy and oily skin and is applied to creams to treat insect bites (perhaps ironic, given that in its natural, raw form, it stings the skin). It’s also a good source of antioxidants, which are thought to deliver anti-ageing benefits.
As well as potential skin benefits, the nettle plant is also believed to be an effective scalp tonic for managing dry or oily hair. This makes it an ideal natural ingredient for beauty brands that produce shampoos and conditioners.
