Sunflower oil is perhaps most widely known for both its therapeutic and culinary prowess, but it’s not the only part of this cheery plant that deserves praise. The petals of the sunflower plant are believed to be effective for relieving a sore throat, helping to minimise inflammation of the tonsils and windpipe. They may also help to treat eye problems.
Sunflower petals can be dried and made into infusions for the bath or for soap. Blended with oil they can also be transformed into soothing salves, balms and body butters to nourish the skin. They can also be used as a decorative element for candles.
The bright hue of sunflower petals make them ideal for use as an all-natural dye for fabric. Typically the petals are steeped in boiling water for a while to allow its natural colouring to transfer. Once cooled and strained and liquid can colour materials and fabric delicately and without any chemicals needed.
Herbalists tend to prepare sunflower petals as a tea or tincture. It tends to have a strong, bitter flavour and a sweet, honeyed smell.
