This action is believed to be due to saw palmetto blocking 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a hormone that experts think may cause androgenic alopecia by shortening the hair’s growth cycle.

In particular it is believed to normalise the reproductive system in both men and women if there is an issue present.
