Product description
The ripe fruit of the saw palmetto tree is used in many modern medicines – but its roots are ancient. The fruit can be prepared in different ways depending on if it is to be used in supplements, medications or herbal remedies. Native Americans have used the dark berries for many years for its diuretic and sedative properties and for its ability to reduce coughing.
The Benefits of Saw Palmetto Berries
It’s all in the Preparation
Saw Palmetto berries tend to be prepared in one of two ways. To obtain a powder the berries are collected – usually while they’re still young and green. They are then dried and crushed into a powder. Alternatively oils are removed from the berries, as they have a high oil content. This oil is then used to make extracts. Typically the powder is used to make a tea, or included in medicinal capsules and tablets, and it will contain lower quantities of the beneficial oils.
Potent Properties
Saw palmetto is a good source of antioxidants, including methyl gallate and epicatechin. Experts know that these compounds can prevent cell damage, give protection against disease and reduce inflammation. So it may be that using saw palmetto in supplements could help reduce inflammation thanks to this.
To Good Health
Saw Palmetto is perhaps best known for its use in helping prostate conditions, in particular benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is possible that when using saw palmetto as a supplement it could help increase flow of urine and reduce the need to go to the toilet during the night for men. It can have useful benefits to women too to help strengthen urinary organs. It could also be useful for another condition that most commonly affects men: androgenic alopecia, or male- or female-pattern baldness. This action is believed to be due to saw palmetto blocking 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a hormone that experts think may cause androgenic alopecia by shortening the hair’s growth cycle.
Balancing Herb
Saw palmetto is categorised as an adaptogenic herb – that is its unique combination of phytonutrients can have a balancing effect on the endocrine system. In particular it is believed to normalise the reproductive system in both men and women if there is an issue present. Its ability to inhibit enzymes which impact testosterone levels means it could also help to improve libido too.
