    Blackcurrant Fruit Whole

    Ribes nigrum

    Form: Whole

    Product description

Native to the temperate regions of Northern Europe and Northern Asia, records show that blackcurrants have been used since the 1500s for their herbal benefits. Known as the ‘forbidden fruit’ in the United States, blackcurrants have been banned in the US due to their ability to infect white pine trees.

High in antioxidants to help treat ailments

Full of antioxidants and vitamin C, blackcurrants may help boost the immune system to fight against infection and bacteria. With the highest amount of antioxidants in fruit, blackcurrants may also be effective in treating a variety of ailments. Some may consume blackcurrants to help with blood flow, eye health, gut health and kidney health.

Blackcurrants are high in gamma-linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid. It is thought that this fruit can help decrease inflammation and improve symptoms of those with inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Gamma-linoleic acid may also reduce joint pain and stiffness for those with arthritis.

    Filled with dietary fibre

With a high amount of dietary fibre, blackcurrants may help increase good cholesterol and lower bad cholesterol levels. It may also lower the chances of obesity, high blood pressure, and stroke.

    Banned in the United States

Blackcurrant bushes were first grown in the United States in the 1630s, but professional cultivation of the plant was outlawed in 1911 due to findings showing it is a carrier of white pine blister rust, a fungus that kills white pine trees. As a result, blackcurrant has been banned in order to safeguard pine trees.

Nowadays, the majority of white pine trees have been developed to resist white pine blister rust. As efforts are made to breed the fruit to prevent infecting pine trees, blackcurrants have begun to thrive again in the US in areas such as Connecticut, Oregon, and New York.
