Product description
Perhaps best known for being a relaxing herb, chamomile is part of the Asteraceae family of plants. Also known as German chamomile, the plants are native to southern Europe and western parts of Asia but have since spread to more temperate regions, including the UK.
Their small, daisy-like blooms feature around 10-25 white ray flowers and are in flower from June–August. Releasing a distinctive apple-scent when crushed, they get their name from the Greek for ‘earth apple’. In fact, this flower has a long legacy, with records dating back to Ancient Greece and Ancient Egypt.
It has a bitter and aromatic taste. Chamomile flowers contain volatile oils, flavonoids, spiroethers, coumarins and polysaccharides.
Chamomile is sold in a number of cut sizes: cut, cut fine, fines, powder and 5:1 extract powder.
How is it used?
For herbal remedies and supplements, chamomile flower extracts are often applied to products to relieve symptoms of hay fever, inflammation and gastrointestinal disorders.
There are a number of beneficial nutrients contained within the flowers that can be consumed through a powder extract. These include antioxidants, which are believed to help remove free radicals and toxins from the body.
The apple aroma and floral flavour offer a pleasant addition for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. In cuisine, this flower can be used in much the same way as other edible flowers. It’s particularly suitable for adding a punchy floral flavour and apple scent to vanilla-flavoured desserts or for pairing with apple pie, crumble or sorbet.
One of its most common applications is as a tea infusion, which is believed to offer soothing effects on the body, including improved sleep, relief from stomach complaints, and is even thought to reduce anxiety.
It’s also thought that chamomile has health benefits for the skin. Ancient Egyptians applied the flowers to their skin after developing red or dry skin from the sun, and skincare brands are tapping into the potential anti-ageing benefits as a result of their antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In essence, it’s thought that chamomile can contribute to tighter pores and brighter, younger-looking skin.
Due to their crisp apple scent, they are also used in aromatherapy essential oils, which can be used in home fragrances and diffusers.
