Chamomile is one of the world’s oldest and most trusted medicinal botanic ingredients. Since the Middle Ages, it’s been used in the treatment of asthma and stomach complaints – today chamomile tea is still widely used to calm the stomach.

In fact, chamomile tea is a renowned calming preparation with mild sedative properties, but its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties make it ideal to settle tummies.

Chamomile and beauty

The chamomile flowers contain many useful compounds, one of which is known to help lighten and brighten blonde hair – many shampoos and conditioners take advantage of this ability to subtly change hairs’ appearance.

Thanks to its ability to calm and soothe skin and its anti-inflammatory effect, it has also been used as an ingredient for after sun lotions, where it can boost hydration levels and be a salve for sunbaked skin.

These properties also make it ideal in many forms of skincare to balance moisture levels and leave skin soft and soothed.

Chamomile Tea – the healing drink

Chamomile tea is mainstream – and no wonder, as the tea has been proven to help multiple conditions including reducing menstrual pain, lowering blood sugar levels, minimising inflammation, assisting with sleep and relaxation and even helping to treat symptoms of the common cold.

The tea is packed full of antioxidants which play a vital role in reducing the risk of many different diseases, such as heart disease and cancer. It is also rich in one particular antioxidant – apigenin – which can promote healthy sleep and reduce insomnia.

For tea, the flowers are dried and then can be infused in hot water to make a tea that boasts an earthy, slightly sweet taste.

Chamomile essential oils

There are two varieties of chamomile which are commonly used for remedies – Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) and German chamomile (Matricaria recutita).

As an essential oil, chamomile is frequently used to help anxiety – acting as a mild sedative thanks to the compounds it contains. It’s also mixed into skin care and is very gentle so suitable for even sensitive skins. Chamomile can help to restrict blood vessels which makes it excellent at relieving pain associated with PMS and headaches.

Chamomile oil pairs very well with citrus scents like lemon, bergamot and grapefruit, as well as florals like jasmine, lavender, ylang-ylang and geranium.

Chamomile and culinary uses

Although it’s not widely used in cooking, over in Spain chamomile is used to give manzanilla (a Spanish sherry) its floral notes. Interestingly, in Spain the flower is also known as manzanilla, meaning little apple and given for is similarities in appearance to apple blossom.
